RAVENDEN RIDGE RANCH occupies approximately 62 acres on a ridge top overlooking the town of Ravenden, Arkansas.  We relocated here from California in September, 2006.  (see “About Us” for the story.)  The ranch has plenty of grass, woods, and browse for our Kiko goats to eat.  Permanent and temporary electric cross-fencing allows us to rotate the goats among several areas, thereby making better use of the forage as well as helping to control the parasite load in the pastures.  We continue to build cross-fencing, practice sound forestry principles, and improve the quality and quantity of our grazing and browsing areas.

In late 2007, we welcomed SOUTHWEST CEASAR to our herd.  Ceasar is a double-registered New Zealand Kiko buck, sired by the original New Zealand import, “Goatex Goliath.”

Southwest Ceasar

Our heartfelt thanks goes to Max and Pat Walker of Jack Fork Valley Ranch in Oklahoma  (www.goatees.biz)  for allowing us to make Ceasar part of our Kiko breeding program.  We hope that Ceasar will add his outstanding genetics to our herd, as he did for the Walkers and their collection of top-of-the-line New Zealand Kikos.

Ceasar is busy creating the next generation of New Zealand Fullblood and American Premier Purebred Kiko goats.  Kikos are known for their parasite resistance, excellent mothering skills, aggressive foraging abilities, rapid growth and solid, healthy hooves.  Goats that do not exhibit those characteristics are removed from our breeding herd.

We keep careful records of birth weights, number of kids per litter per doe, progress weights at 30, 90, and 150 days, and compute EPD’s (Expected Progeny Differentials) for each doe, every year.  We deworm our goats only as needed, using the FAMACHA method.  We also make note of the intangibles, such as mothering ability, ease of kidding, frequency of foot trimming and deworming required.  These records help us decide which lines continue to exemplify the Kiko ideal, which lines are best suited to carry on those genetics, and which lines are failing to measure up.  These figures are available to buyers on request.  Although we have seen that such figures can vary widely from ranch to ranch depending upon management practices, keeping good records gives us an accurate picture of how each goat on our ranch is performing, compared to our ranch average.

We feel that only through the use of good recordkeeping and rigorous culling can we continue to meet our buyers’ expectations for quality breeding stock and starter herds.
